ZAGAT says...

John and I are honored. ZAGAT likes us! :)

Zagat names caffe d'bolla Utah's Must-Try Coffee Shop!

Utah: Caffe d’Bolla

At this Salt Lake City cafe, they source coffees from all over the world and micro-roast them in house. You can find all sorts of uncommon beans, including Kenya Nyeri AB Gatomboya, Nicaragua Finca Maria and Panama Volcancito. In case you want to learn more about these special blends, they also offer $20 "Coffee 101" classes each month. Not only do they do coffee right, but they also have a stellar tea program, traveling to Asia yearly to purchase some of their teas right from the growers.

The Selective Echo write-up on espresso at caffe d'bolla

John and caffe d'bolla's espresso is featured in The Selective Echo, a blog of Salt Lake City and its metropolitan best!

I am very proud of John and our shop, and thanks to Les (of The Slective Echo) for this wonderful write-up. You can read the article "At caffe d'bolla, the quest for great espresso blends always open ended" from www.selectiveecho.com.

best on-air chinese lesson

I arrived at the radio station last night, and Dawn and Renee told me "Chinese Radio" won CityWeekly's "Best of Utah".

Apparently we won "Best On-Air Chinese Lesson". I'm happy... even though I had no idea who Jennifer, Yen, and Rachel are... I think they were the hosts on the show ages ago. The paper probably got the host info from the KRCL website (that still has the old "Chinese Radio" info page on it). I'm yiching for cryingout loud, and my co-host is Yachi.

And if you read the little mention and are wondering... "2" in Chinese is "er," and “It’s kind of pronounced like a lion making a little roar—aar!”

Coffee in E Flat!

Some of you already knew that Peter Rosen from KUTV came and interviewed us about the Competition. Here's the story:

No, John and I did not win, but we did learn about the La Marzocco GB5 and the effect of the altitude on the beans. We'll be at the next year's competition for sure!

Congratulations to our champion Jon Lewis! He totally deserved it!

And now if only I could look a bit thinner on the video...

peter peter

It was an eventful morning. Peter Rosen from Salt Lake City's KUTV (Channel 2) came to interview us at the caffe about the upcoming Mountain Region Barista Championship in March.

Peter was very nice and patient with me, so I actually was not nervous like I thought I would be. :) I don't know if John was nervous, but he did sweat a bit. hehe.

I haven't really been writing about the MRBC much. It's the first barista competition in this region, and the first ever barista event for me as well. I didn't want to say too much about it and not be able to do well in it. :O John and I have both been practicing for it, and I actually think we can do well if we don't get too nervous. I know there will be a lot of talented baristas at the competition, and I'm really excited to see what everyone will bring.

I hope John and I can place in the competition... that will really boost my confidence! OK I'd better get back to work and practice pulling a few more shots.

happy valentine's!

valentine's-08
I was determined to pour a little heart in everyone's latte today, and I did it. This one was the first of the day where I took a picture of it and sent to our myspace friends. Cheesy I know, but wasn't it lovely?
