tiny little moon

I was at the studio on monday a week ago, and saw this tiny little moon through the window and roof. It was so cute!

OK the moon was the one on the left.

I looked for it again last night, but it was not there any more.

jazz festival

Ryan at KRCL gave me two sponsor passes to the Salt Lake City Jazz Festival, which is held at the Library Square across from the caffe. I will probably check it out later today and tomorrow.

Thanks Ryan!

chinese radio on demand 061108

Some of you may already know that the show I'm hosting at KRCL has been moved to a super early 5-6am slot on Wednesday. The station has been archiving our shows online and you can listen to the shows, along with my Chinese lessons on demand at KRCL.org

Ya-chi and I will each edit two shows a month. I am in charge of the first two weeks and she is for the later two weeks. She does the local events and I do the weekly featured Chinese lessons.

Anyhow, I just uploaded the June 11th show, and you can listen to it now by going to its KRCL mp3 page (and click on the mp3 button).

John usually helps out during the Chinese Lesson segments, which are toward the end of the show. He's funny. Good, and funny.

man purse

Ryan was helping me finalize our first recorded show, and he turned around to grab something from his bag. He referred to the bag as his "man purse."

OMG. It was the first time I heard another person use that term other than myself.

I wonder if he got that term from the same source I did. (The original term, though, was "man bag," but I've just always been calling it "man purse.")

thank you.

We had our final edition of 7-8:30pm "Chinese Radio" last night. It was a great show, and I loved it when some listeners called in and said how much they enjoyed the show. Thank you, but don't be sad, because I'm going to stick around, with other great hosts at KRCL... to bring great music and topics to our listeners, with some of the different show formats and times... so stay tuned!

end of an era

For the past few days I had been listening to some of the KRCL hosts air their "final edition" shows. Some of the hosts had been with KRCL for a couple decades, and it was a little sad to hear that they were moving on.

KRCL is going under major makerover, and many of the shows have been moved around or removed at this moment. Our show will be moved to Wednesday mornings from 5-6 am. Yes I said 'AM'. I am hoping we will not only retain our current listners but also get some new ones. Since listeners can listen to the show with live streaming and as podcast archives, I'm still pretty optimistic about this whole station/program format change.

With that being said, I've been having a lot of fun editing and playing with our first recorded show that's going on air May 7th from 5-6am, and our program director Ryan has been so great and helpful. He's the best. There are still a lot of things that I still need to learn, and I'm really enjoying this experience.

But it's just like Joey said in Friends on the last night him and Chandler were roommates... "awww... it's huge ... it's like the end of an era!"

new KRCL "Chinese Radio"

As many of you already know, KRCL is going through a major makeover, and from early May, the programming and schedules will be changed, and a new KRCL will be born.

"Chinese Radio" will also be changed. It will still have great music, events, talk topics and the mini Chinese lesson, but it will be moved to Wednesdays morning from 5-6 am. I know the program time sounds crazy for those of you who know me in person (and my oh-I-can't-get-up-early attitude)... but NO I'm not going to do the show live, but to pre-record it.

So I met with Ryan and Troy (who produces the super popular and awesome RadioActive on KRCL) along with Yachi and Jenny this morning. I learned a lot from Ryan and Troy today. They are amazing people and talent.

I hope KRCL will prosper with the new changes. It's such a wonderful radio station whose programs are not like any other. I will also do my part to make sure the new "Chinese Radio" rocks.

best on-air chinese lesson

I arrived at the radio station last night, and Dawn and Renee told me "Chinese Radio" won CityWeekly's "Best of Utah".

Apparently we won "Best On-Air Chinese Lesson". I'm happy... even though I had no idea who Jennifer, Yen, and Rachel are... I think they were the hosts on the show ages ago. The paper probably got the host info from the KRCL website (that still has the old "Chinese Radio" info page on it). I'm yiching for cryingout loud, and my co-host is Yachi.

And if you read the little mention and are wondering... "2" in Chinese is "er," and “It’s kind of pronounced like a lion making a little roar—aar!”

KZCL 90.5!

I was at KRCL earlier today and learned that "Chinese Radio" is the first show that's broadcasting on KZCL 90.5 FM in Cache Valley! I know KRCL has been waiting for this day for years... and I'm glad more and more people are able to hear the great programs on KRCL.

And of course, people can hear KRCL programs online at www.KRCL.org! We actually learned that we had a listener in Kentuky! :)

WuBai & China Blue

I think Ryan at KRCL was a bit surprised to hear WuBai & China Blue last night, and it was a good sort of surprise, I believe, because he "wow"ed a few times. :)

A lot of people I know here thought Asian music is all about pop... WuBai & China Blue can prove that's not the case. They are AWESOME!

fall radiothon at KRCL

We held the fall radiothon at KRCL tonight. I was happy that many people called, but sad that we didn't reach our goal of $1,000 within the hour and a half of the show.

KRCL is a commercial-free community radio, where 80% of its operating budge comes from its listening community! The program I'm doing, "Chinese Radio", brings our listeners music from Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong, as well as teaching simple and useful Mandarin Chinese.

If you listen to my show and would like to make a pledge, please do so before October 14th by calling 359-9191, or online at KRCL. Remember to mention that you want to support "Chinese Radio!"

KRCL Chinese

After getting some inquiries and comments from our listeners on the show, I decided to put together a simple little blog for the "mini chinese class" segment of our "Chinese Radio" show.

Chinese Radio is on 90.9FM SLC every Wednesday nights from 7-8:30pm, or on www.KRCL.org

I typed out the PinYin (spell of sounds) of the vocabulary and phrases we use in the show, so listeners can "see" and follow along the class easier.

tune in!

I was suprised to know that many more people are listening to our KRCL radio show now. This past Wednesday during our show many listeners called in and commented how much they loved the new Mandarin Chinese Lesson segment of the show. I'm so glad my idea worked... When KRCL was thinking about cancelling the show prior to us new DJs'arrival because of low listenership, I figured we had to "market" our show to non-Chinese speaking listeners... and adding a segment to teach this language over a billion people speak in the world was the way to go. It worked!

Of course I had to teach the mini class in English, and I did. Most listeners that called in that night were actually English speakers, so I guess my little "strategy" worked! I'll continue to make the lessons interesting, and Qiao Liang, Yachi, and myself will make sure the show stays good and stays on.

When: Wednesday nights from 7pm - 8:30pm Mountain Time
Where: KRCL 90.0 FM Salt Lake City, or online at KRCL.org

Tune in!

KRCL meeting

The KRCL meeting went quite well today. I addressed Ryan the director's concerns and expressed how committed I was. The Asian community was really nervous about KRCL cancelling the show, but Ryan did want the younger and more energetic hosts (me, Leon, and Yachi) to "revive" the show.

So the show is still on! I'd better work harder for it now.

being a DJ is fun

I hosted our KRCL show with YaChi today... without Jenny! The two of us were newbies and without full training, but I thought we actually did a good job!

I made John listen to the show online, and give me feedbacks. Apparently I did a fairly good job, and I was not too loud, or too quiet. I was cool.

I'm thinking about dividing the program into a few sections, so we could have better organization of topics to talk about, and/or different genres of music to play. It's so much fun!

yiching the DJ in training

I went down to KRCL last night with Jenny from Eastern Trends. Eastern Trends is the only Chinese newspaper in Utah, and I translate articles from D.C., the capital, and Utah AG's office for it.

Jenny has been working at the Chinese program at KRCL for 9 years! When I was presented with the opportunity to be a DJ on the show, I was really excited, and thought I'd give it a try.

It was so much fun! I brought a few of my funky CDs and talked about some of the artists and musicians on the show, and I learned a bit about how the sound system works. I think Jenny likes my excited and slightly hyper talking/DJ-ing style, because she's going to sign me up at KRCL's DJ traning after Wednesday night! After a few weeks training I'll be a really cool DJ, plus I can access the walls after walls of music at the station, and use the recording equipment, too! I'm so excited! I just hope they don't kick me out of DJ school during traning period.

radio DJ. me?

The local KRCL radio station has a Mandarin Chinese show on Wednesday night, and I may be DJ-ing for it soon. I'm not sure yet, but I will check it out tomorrow night, and see if I will be able to contribute to the show. I don't know if anyone actually listens to the show, but I know if I can bring something exciting, cool, and a wide variety of music and fun stuff to the show, I can get more people to listen to it.

I have no idea how this is going to work yet, but I'll find out tomorrow night!
